How an Oversized Fit Should Sit, and How to Pick Your Size

Oversized is not the same as too big. A shirt that is simply a size up hangs off you in the wrong places. A shirt cut to be oversized is wide on purpose, and it knows where it is supposed to stop.

That difference is most of what this post is about.

Where it should land

The shoulder. On a boxy tee the seam does not sit on top of your shoulder. It drops past it, onto the top of the arm. That is what gives the shape its softness. If the seam is sitting right on the bone, the fit is closer to a regular tee.

The sleeve. It should be wide and finish somewhere between the middle of the upper arm and just above the elbow. Not tight around the arm, and not flapping past the elbow either.

The body. It falls fairly straight from the chest rather than narrowing at the waist. There should be room to move, and a little air between the shirt and your sides.

The hem. Around the hip. Long enough to cover the waistband when you lift your arms, short enough that it does not start to look like a dress.

Get those four right and the shirt looks considered rather than borrowed.

Picking a size

The cut already does the oversizing for you. So for the shape it was designed around, take the size you normally wear. If you prefer something a little closer to the body, go down one. Going up a size is usually where it tips from relaxed into swamped.

The most reliable thing you can do is lay a tee you already like flat on a table. Measure across from armpit to armpit, and from the top of the collar to the hem. Those two numbers tell you more about how a shirt will feel than the letter on the label ever will.

And remember that a heavier cotton holds its shape. It will not cling, so the width you see is the width you get.

The shirt itself

Every ALUNA tee in the Gatecrasher collection is cut the same way: 230gsm heavyweight cotton, a boxy oversized fit with a dropped shoulder, a crew neck and short sleeves, in sizes S to XL. The front is plain apart from a small crescent moon on the chest, with ALUNA on the sleeve and at the neck. The artwork lives on the back.

The shirt in the pictures is INNOVATION in cream, the spiral that reads "BEWARE THE NEWLY INVENTED MATTERS".
