What 230gsm Actually Means, and Why It Was Chosen

Pick up two plain white t-shirts and you can usually tell which is better before you look at a label. One falls flat against your hand. The other has a bit of body to it. Most of that difference comes down to one number.

That number is gsm: grams per square metre. Cut a one-metre square of the fabric, put it on a scale, and that is the reading. It says nothing about the colour, the print or the brand. It only tells you how much cotton is in the cloth.

Why weight changes everything else

A lot of everyday t-shirts sit somewhere around 150 to 180gsm. That is light enough to be cool and cheap to make, and it is why so many tees cling, twist at the seams and go see-through after a while.

At 230gsm there is noticeably more fabric doing the work. The shirt holds its own shape instead of taking the shape of whatever is underneath. The shoulders sit where they were cut to sit. The hem falls straight rather than riding up. You feel it in the hand straight away: it is heavier, a little denser, more like a garment than a layer.

The photo above was taken in a laundrette, and it shows the point better than words. Nobody is wearing that shirt. It is just hanging from a hook, and it still keeps its square, boxy outline.

Why it matters for a back print

Every ALUNA design lives on the back, printed large. A big print on thin fabric tends to fight the shirt: the cloth pulls, the print puckers, and the words stop reading cleanly when you move.

A heavier fabric gives the print something to sit on. It stays flatter, and the phrase stays legible from across a room. That was the main reason for choosing the weight. The words on the back are the point of each design, so the cloth underneath had to carry them properly.

It is also why the fit is oversized. Heavy cotton cut close to the body can feel stiff. Cut boxy, with a dropped shoulder, it hangs loosely and moves with you.

The shirt itself

Every shirt in the Gatecrasher collection is made the same way: 230gsm heavyweight cotton, a boxy oversized fit, dropped shoulders, a crew neck and short sleeves, in sizes S to XL. The front is plain apart from a small crescent moon on the chest. ALUNA is on the sleeve and at the neck. The design is on the back.

There are three designs: SACRED ("BLOOD. PROPERTY. HONOR."), INNOVATION ("BEWARE THE NEWLY INVENTED MATTERS") and PATIENCE ("Glad tidings to the strangers"). You can see all three, in every colour, here: the Gatecrasher collection. The shirt in the photo is SACRED in cream: ALUNA SACRED oversized t-shirt.

Modesty is power.
